I have to be the dissenting opinion amongst the reviews of the Willow 3. I will preface my review with two bits of information: firstly that I was used to riding a zippy little single speed prior to purchasing the Willow and secondly I only bought a more upright bike because of a spinal injury and SI joint dysfunction. Unfortunately, I have been thoroughly dissatisfied with both the bike and the communication with Brooklyn Bikes. The first issue I encountered was that Brooklyn didn't forward my contact info to the shop that built my bike, rather the shop had to track me down on facebook to alert me my bike was ready. Next, I was informed that the front fender was bent in shipment. The shop that built it managed to hammer it mostly out but recommended I contact Brooklyn Bikes, which I did and they agreed to ship me a new part but it took six days of emailing to arrange having the part sent and I was never informed that the part was actually shipped out or provided tracking. After all the initial problems I tried to get used to riding my new bike ... the seat was a terror on my pelvis and SI joint, so I had to have it replaced, the faux leather handle wraps keep slipping, so also replaced. The bike is generally slow, heavy, and clunky but I gave it some more time and thought I was getting used to it when I got hit with the kicker ... the back fender broke, snapped at the connection point (see attached picture). I emailed over a week ago and Brooklyn agreed to send me a new part, but again I have received no word on the shipment and still haven't received the part despite being assured it would be sent out directly (I answer all their emails within an hour of receipt). So now I'm relegated to riding around on a two month old bike that clanks and clangs and is being held together with twine. I have tried to be understanding and diplomatic but overall this purchase and experience has been such a let down. Ultimately if there was an option to return the bike I would.
When I first received the Willow, I ordered it directly through Brooklyn Bicycle Co. and it was delivered to our local bike shop. The bike arrived as promised but with different handles and a different seat than the one I test rode and the photos on line. I could deal with the seat but the handles to me seemed sub par. The material they were made of appeared to be eroding already, plus they were very susceptible to staining, so I did not feel they would work well long-term. I asked for the handles that should have been originally on the bike. Brooklyn Bicycle Co. handled the request very well - they shipped the replacement handles and I went to my local bike shop where they replaced them and did not charge me for them. Overall, I am very pleased with the ride of the bike, the shifting and I've already gotten a few compliments on its looks. Overall a great bike for riding around town.
After I decided my old Raleigh Sports wasn't worth all the upkeep and repairs I decided it was time for a new bike. I found the Brooklyn Willow through the blog Lovely Bicycle and I'm glad I did! It's an incredible value for the price. The ride is very smooth and easy, eating up all the bumps and potholes. I have a couple gradual hills on my commute and the gearing does well with it. The only thing that has taken some getting used to is the gearing range. It seems to be widely spaced, so that it feels like a large jump between each gear. I'm sure its to accommodate a large range of situations, it just sometimes makes it hard to find the right gear. It doesn't bother me all that much, though, and I suppose you could get the 7-gear if you feel like it might. I'm 5'8" with a long torso and I went with the large. I'm glad I did, it feels very stately and grand riding this size of bike. The width of the handlebars is nice too as I can finally see behind me with my rear-view mirror. I went with the black, which I really like for its understated style. The contrast with the white tires looks great. Unfortunately the bottle of touch-up paint that comes with the bike fell out of the little bag while we were rolling it out of the bike shop. I haven't noticed any nicks in the frame yet so hopefully we'll be good! I'm so glad to finally have a bike that I don't need to worry about, fits me, and looks great!
I never thought I'd be able to afford a bike so stylish and smooth. This bike is EVERYTHING! I can carry it into my basement for storage every day because it is light. Also, I'm a vegan and so happy to be able to have leather features, since I never thought that would be possible for me. THANK YOU BROOKLYN BICYCLE CO! You make my bike dreams come true :)
I just love love my bike
I absolutely love my Willow! Its so lightweight and easy to manage in the city. It steers well and handles bumps great. I love the stylish vintage look as well as it's great performance. The cargo box is super handy too!
My title says it all.....I get lots of compliments, its pretty to look at and its fast too ! Love it very much !
Alex will send photos soon
i'm totally in love with my bike. for me, this bike made a huge difference. i have only ever had vintage bikes before. but with this bike i can have all the modern amenities, but still with style! i'm obsessed and literally telling everyone about it.
I knew I made the right decision to purchase the Willow when I walked into my local DC bike shop to pick it up. The bike mechanic said "Do you know how well made this bike is?" Then the clerk confided that everybody was stopping to ask about the cool retro bike.
I did a lot of shopping on the Internet before I chose this company. I admire that it is a real Brooklyn company and entrepreneurial startup since I run my own company. I'd rather support a small family firm.
I struggled between two bike models but finally chose the Willow. I feel like I am flying when I ride it. It makes me remember riding my bikes when I was a kid - free as the wind. The seat is very comfortable for long journeys. I plan to bring it to the beach for Labor Day holidays.
I chose the black bike because it looks so sophisticated with the brown leather handles.
I couldn't be happier with my purchase! My Siamese cats are also fascinated with the new bike in our home.
Everybody loves this bike. The color Sea glass is beautiful. The ride is perfect. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a quality bicycle. Get one now!
What a great bike! I'm a novice bike person just getting back into riding after almost a decade (!!!). My last bike was a Florida beach cruiser with big chunky treaded tires, so I was pretty nervous about getting on my beautiful new Willow. Happy to report that my first ride went very well, my new bike handled wonderfully, and I had a ridiculous number of compliments from random strangers out-and-about. A sturdy, easy-to-ride bike that shifted easily and without issues, so I pretty quickly felt comfortable & confident. It really is a sharp-looking bike, too, in shiny black. Loved being able to have the bike delivered & assembled at one of our local bike shops... so convenient & a much appreciated option. I plan on getting lots of fun and joy out of my new bike!
Love the bike, love the look and style, sea foam wasn't my first choice, that color was backordered, but Brooklyn was awesome in informing me of the delay and offered to throw in a little something for the hassle. I loved that the price included shipping and assembly.
I bought this bike for my daughter and she's thrilled with it! Thank you for building such a great product! She however was NOT particularly fond of Austin Tri Cyclust and their non-chalant and arrogant attitude. They did not fit her properly and when she came back to be re-fitted they were very put out and defensive. Maybe reconsider them as your "partner".? I ordered the crate for the back. Where is it?
Me and anything with 2 wheels were mortal enemies. I have crashed every bike/moped I have ever rode...and for over a decade, refused to ever get on another bike. I recently decided to just bite the bullet and buy a bike to get myself back on one. After researching a bunch of options, I always found myself coming back to the Willow. Loved the quality, the look, the ease of purchasing online and getting it delivered/assembled locally, the accessories, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback...everywhere, not just on the site. Since receiving it, I have literally become obsessed with riding it and look for any excuse to get out on the road. It rides so smooth and it's just so beautiful. Just looking at it makes me smile. Looking forward to many adventures on this bike!
I typically don't take the time to review purchases but I'm so proud of this product that I thought I would! I surprised my wife with the Willow 3 (in black) and she absolutely loves it! This bicycle was designed to be simple and reliable, and it was built with one thing in mind... having fun! The quality is superior and Brooklyn Bicycle Co. really took the time to get even the details right (i.e. the sturdiness of the kickstand with the affixed thick rubber grip).
I chose the handcrafted wooden rear crate not only because it's a stylish accessory but because of it's functionality too. It'll be great when riding to our local farmer's market and cruising around town. When it arrived, one of the corners was damaged so after a quick call I had a new one just a few days later. Absolutely no hassle or worry!
While there are other brands out there building similar looking bikes, I would highly recommend Brooklyn Bicycle Co. because of the quality and value of their products, along with the superior customer service.
I love how I was able to buy this bike online, have it shipped my local bike shop without having to worry about shipping costs, have it professionally assembled without having to pay extra, and yet I still get a free tune up from my local shop as though I had bought it there. There are no hidden costs. The sticker price is really what you pay. I have a red Willow 3, and I had initially thought I was going to have to "settle" for the orange one that was available at my local shop because I didn't want to have to deal with shipping and assembly costs. There is no need to settle. I got exactly what I wanted with absolutely no hassle.
My Willow 3 is a S/M size, and I am 5'6", and it fits very well. On the website it does say that 5'6" is the cut off for S/M, but the sticker on my bike frame does say that it can accommodate some one up to 5'8". I was able to sit on the orange one at the shop and get a feel for the size, and this is what prevented me from getting the L (which is what I originally intended to do). I did raise my seat a bit, but it is not all the way up, and I believe that the large would have been too tall for me. If you are in the middle of the S/M and L height suggestions, I would recommend going to a shop and really seeing the difference (because there is quite a difference) to pick out what is best for you.
The Willow 3 was a replacement/upgrade for my Electra Townie 21. I loved my old Townie, and it was an incredibly PLUSH ride (also stupid cute). While the Willow 3 is less so (naturally/to be expected), the Willow 3 is very comfortable (and far more practical while also being quite easy on the eyes). The Townie weighed a **million** pounds, and the Willow 3 is under 30 with a higher quality frame.
I spent quite some time bike shopping, and I am so glad I found Brooklyn Bicycle Co. This is a really lovely bike on which to get around. I could not be happier with it.
I haven't ridden a bicycle for a few years so I was a bit nervous, but this bike makes it easy. I'm now biking several times a week around the city for constant stretches of at least 11 km at a time. It's durable, sturdy, easy to control and surprisingly fast. The colours are beautiful (I have it in Columbia Blue). The gears shift smoothly and the ride is also very smooth on bumpy roads. I now can't imagine not biking!
I absolutely love this bike! It's so comfortable to ride and I get tons of compliments on how stylish it is. I take this bike everywhere instead of driving now!
This bike was a gift to me from my boyfriend and I LOVE it! We live in Nashville and it is perfect for cruising around town to different neighborhoods. He also has a Brooklyn bicycle, so we knew I wanted one from the same company. The three gears are just right for the hills in town and the ride is smooth. I've already gotten multiple compliments on the look and style of it! The color is great and I love it! Great purchase - highly recommend!
I have never had a new bike, and when I saw this in the store, I knew I had to have it (the colors drew me in). One of the best purchases I have ever made! It is perfect for getting around the city and is extremely comfortable on long rides. The gears shift very well and I have had no problems with the chain or fenders. I highly suggest this bike to anyone who is looking for a good city bike!
I'm head over heels for my new Willow 3! It is classic, polished, cute and it's performance is stellar. I feel like all eyes are on me when I'm riding around the city. I get compliments on it everywhere I go. I've been pining after it ever since I saw it in my local bike shop and finally gave in to buying one for myself. It's a worthwhile investment, especially since I don't have a car in this big city (Washington DC). Absolutely would recommend this bicycle to anyone wondering about getting one for him/herself!
I won this bike at an event and it changed my biking life. As a NYC rider, I discovered that the stress is as or more related to the bike than the street. On this bike, I feel cool, calm and in control. On top of that, the ride is incredibly smooth and zippy. This bike moves! Often times people will pass be because I look slow then. 9/10 times, I ease on by. Really great city bike.
Obsessed with my new Willow from Brooklyn Bike Co. As a NYC girl who moved to San Francisco, I love that I was able to order a cool ride straight from NY. I picked it up at a local bike shop down the street from my house less than 48 hours later. Unbelievable customer service and my favorite bike ever. East to West, you guys are the best!!
I've been riding my Willow 3 speed here in Providence for a few weeks now, daily. It's the best bike I've ever owned. I've been riding year round commuting to work for 15+ years now ( though once the snow piles up I walk as the roads become to narrow) I recommend this bike! :)
I bought the bike because it had all the specs I wanted. It's hard to find a good step-through bike in a large size. I prefer steel over aluminum because aluminum is too stiff. I wanted the better cro-mo steel instead of hi-ten. It's a classic three speed and perfectly satisfactory for a relatively flat city. The upright position is so much more comfortable. And I had a classic Raleigh 3-speed when I was a kid in the '60s. I rode the heck out of that old bike. I intend to do the same with this one.
I'm obsessed with this bike and I get so many compliments on it! I love riding it around NYC. The only downside is carrying it up 5 flights of stairs but hey on the plus side my arms are looking super toned!
Love my new bike! Ride is upright, smooth and stable and it's the best looking pair of wheels anywhere in town!
Not kidding. People stop, stare and ask where I got it. Really hope this area of NW CT gets pedestrianized for cyclists so getting around doesn't always mean owing a car. Thank you for my new favorite set of wheels!
I actually own two Brooklyn bikes! The first bike I bought was while in Vancouver visiting my kids, and my son and I went to a bike shop on the seawall. The shop had just set a Sea Glass Willow out on display, and I fell in love with it and bought it. It is so beautiful and comfortable, and it has given me hours of enjoyment riding around the city. The problem is that I have to store it at my son's as I live in northern BC (Rolla). After being home for awhile, I kept thinking about my bike. My friends got tired of hearing me lament and convinced me that I needed to have a bike in Rolla. So I went online and bought a Tangerine Willow. The Brooklyn Bicycle Co. shipped it right away and had a local bike store assembled it, and before I knew it I was riding up and down the gravel roads and paved highways of Rolla. Two of the best purchases I've made!
First day on my bike rode the bike paths in Ottawa for 4 1/2 hours....it was awesome love love, love my Willow 3 comfortable, handles well, feels very safe!...what a fabulous choice!
I love my new bike. I looked at many before choosing my Brooklyn. I was actually losing interest in bicycle shopping - and then I saw it. I had to have it. I'm loving it. It's perfect for touring around on the many bike paths in Ottawa.
I was having problems with my new 3 speed Willow bike, as the chain kept falling off. Brooklyn Bike Co. emailed out a form request for feedback on the new bike and I mentioned the chain issue. The next day Ryan Zagata, the company president, called me personally, diagnosed the problem over the phone (the chain was incorrectly tensioned), took it upon himself to call the store where I got the bike and told them to fix it, and then called me back to make sure I was going to take it back in. This personalized attention to customer service blew my mind! I got the bike adjusted and it rides great. It fits my body well, allowing me to sit straight, and I like that I can put my feet on the ground without coming off the seat. I love that it's built to be durable (double rimmed wheels for my daily 3 mile urban commute towing my kid) but is surprisingly light. And it's a very good-looking and stylish bike to boot!
I bought the Willow online last month after realizing there was no dealer here in Santa Monica. Two days later I received a phone call to let me know that the bike had been shipped and was being built up for FREE by a local shop. I love the bike and get heaps of compliments - I'm just hoping maybe they'll ship me that adorable wooden box as a nice gesture.
Riding around Venice has never been better - bought this online and they arranged with a local shop. There was a shipping issue but the way they handled it exceeded any experience I have ever previously had with a brand. Thanks!
The shop recommended this bike out of the three lines they carried and I couldn't be happier. I get a lot of compliments and the bike rides very well.
