Featuring Jenn Dice

Rare is the woman biker who hasn’t walked into a bike shop only to immediately feel unwelcome or out of place. This could be true for a number of reasons: Perhaps there isn’t a single other woman in the shop. Maybe all the imagery on the walls exclusively features male cyclists. Or maybe the women’s gear section is decidedly smaller and less impressive than what’s on offer for men.  

Of course, shops aren’t unwelcoming to women riders on purpose. The daily stresses of retail mean that many shop owners simply don’t have time to take a step back and evaluate whether they’re unintentionally creating a male-dominated space. Nevertheless, bike shops that don’t make a point of welcoming women riders are missing out, says Jenn Dice, Vice President of Business Network and Government Relationsat PeopleForBikes. Not only do these initiatives make the industry more inclusive (a worthy goal in its own right), but they’re also good for business. This is true for a number of reasons:

  • There’s been a huge upswing in the number of women bikers over the past few years. From skills clinics to tour groups, charity rides, and ambassador programs, more and more women are leading the cycling charge. As a result, says Dice, “there’s a growing hunger for women-specific information on riding both on road and off.”
  • Across a wide array of industries, says Dice, “Women make the bulk of the purchasing decisions for their households [and] tend to be genuine ambassadors for the things they love.”
  • “[Increasing numbers of] women are active and healthy, and they want their family and friends to be healthy, too,” says Dice. So they’re likely to spread the word about biking if it’s something with which they’re having positive experiences.

When you put all these factors together, it’s clear that women can be a great economic driver for bike shops of all stripes. In Dice’s line of work, she see this play out every day: Shops and brands that cater to women are seeing positive results in their bottom lines.

So how can bike shops start attracting more women? Dice polled her female colleagues to come up with some stellar ideas.

1. Hire more women for leadership roles

Across the board, every woman cyclist Dice polled said this was the most important factor for helping them feel more welcome in a shop. “As a woman, when you see a woman [upon] walking into a store, it just makes everything easier and feels [more inclusive],” says Dice. Of course, bike shops shouldn’t stop at a single woman employee—bigger stores should aim to hire at least one woman for every category. Just as important as hiring women? Providing them with a supportive working environment and advancement opportunities that will make them more likely to stick around.

2. Host social events

These can take several forms, from inclusive shop rides to women’s-only or family-friendly rides, educational clinics, co-organized programming with local bike advocacy groups, and so on.
    The key to inviting women’s participation in these events is to host them at convenient times, says Dice. “So many women are moms, which means they’re pulled in a million different directions but still want to have community and ride their bikes.” If you’re hosting rides during the week, a short ride early in the morning or right before dinner is a good choice. On weekends, consider hosting family-friendly rides or running kids’ programs while women head out for their own ride.
    Of course, not all women are mothers. There’s a huge spectrum of women who ride, Dice points out, and it’s important to remember that women are a diverse group. Hosting a variety of social events will help ensure you welcome all stripes from this target demographic.

    3. Create an ambassador program

    “Women often play the role of connectors,” says Dice, and this means they’re likely to tell other women about positive experiences they have with your store. “Finding a handful of women who are excited about being your shop ambassadors can add lighter fluid [to your efforts to draw more women into your shop.]”
      Dice advocates for taking the time to talk to these women about how they believe your shop can best connect with other women in your community, and then providing them with the resources they need to organize social events and maybe even create an online community for women. Developing an active ambassador program can help busy shop owners ensure that women-friendly programming happens even when they’re too busy to plan it themselves.  

       

      4. Carry stylish women’s gear

      Too often, women’s bike gear falls into the “shrink it and pink it” category, in which it doesn’t provide any unique value to women but simply features a smaller, pinker version of men’s products. If you want to serve women riders, it’s critical to take the time to research what women bikers are excited about and carry those trendy products, says Dice. This will be especially easy to accomplish if you’ve hired women at your shop.

      5. Consider the optics of what you’re selling

      In addition to stocking high-quality women’s gear, Dice points out that it’s critical to consider how you’re selling it. Does the imagery in your store include women? Are images of women restricted to super-fit models, or do they instead feature a variety of women riders? Do these images showcase women who bike at all aspects of the spectrum, from mountain bikers to road riders and beginners to pros? “As with anything in retail, it’s important to meet the customer where they are by providing them with imagery they can relate to and that feels exciting,” says Dice.

        When you’re running a bike shop, it can be easy to get so caught up in the day-to-day stressors of retail that inclusive initiatives fall by the wayside. But by investing the time and energy in these women-friendly strategies, you’ll not only improve the bike community as a whole—you’ll also do a great service to your company’s bottom line.

        What Are the Differences Between the Franklin and Willow Step-through Models?

        Looking at the Franklin and Willow, but not quite sure how the models compare? No worries – we get this question a lot, so we’ve put together a quick rundown on what sets these models apart!

        1. HANDLEBARS

        This is probably the most notable difference between our step-through models. With the Willow featuring our Swept-Back Handlebars. This means a much more upright (European-style) riding position (think sitting in a chair) that is well suited for leisurely riding.

        The Franklin models feature our Relaxed Ride Handlebars, which are slightly more aggressive and ideal for both commuting and leisurely weekend rides.

         

        2. TIRES

        The Willow comes with cream tires, whereas the Franklin sports black tires. Do note that regardless of color, all our tires offer an added layer of puncture resistance.

         

        3. ACCESSORIES

        The Willow is our premium model and includes a rear carrier, as well as an upgraded sprung saddle and grip set from Selle Royal’s Royalgel™ line.

        The Franklin features Selle Royal Vegan Leather saddle and grips. Please note that this bike does not come with a rear carrier. If you would like to purchase a rear carrier for this model, you will need a 26” carrier for the S/M Franklin and a 700C carrier for the Large Franklin model.

        Both models come with color matched fenders and chainguard, as well as a kickstand.

         

        4. RUST-PROHIBITIVE COATING & GEARING

        As our signature model, the Willow has a few additional premium features including a rust-prohibitive coating on the chain and internal gearing resulting in less maintenance and more riding.

        The Franklin 3 model includes internal gearing (just like the Willow), whereas the Franklin 7 has an external 7-Speed derailleur.

         

        5. FRAME MATERIALS

        On a more technical note – the geometry on both frames is identical, however the Franklin and Willow models are made from different materials. Are you currently thinking “WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?! I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BIKES!!”? Do not fret – we totally get it! Take a breath and read on…

        The Willow frame is made with double-butted 4130 Chromoly Steel. We use a stronger grade of steel, which allows us to use thinner tubing resulting in a lighter frame.

        The Franklin frame is crafted with specially engineered high-tensile steel. What does this mean? We are able to offer a similar bike of a more moderate price point. Our Franklin model is the most economical step-through model in our portfolio of bikes (as well as a team favorite)!
