A well-maintained bike is safer, more enjoyable, and cheaper to own over time. This checklist covers what to check before every ride, what to do each season, and how to store your bike properly when it's not in use.

Skipping maintenance doesn't just cost you performance — it costs you money. A worn chain will gradually destroy your cassette and chainrings, turning a $15 fix into a $150 one. Properly maintained brakes respond faster and wear more evenly. Tires inflated to the right PSI roll more efficiently and resist flats. And a clean, lubricated drivetrain can last two to three times longer than a neglected one.

Daily Maintenance: Before Every Ride

  • Check Tire Pressure Under-inflated tires are the number one cause of preventable flats. Check the PSI stamped on your tire's sidewall — city bike tires typically run 65–95 PSI. Inflate before every ride.
  • Inspect Tires for Damage Spin each tire and look for cuts, embedded glass, bulges, or sidewall cracks. A bulge or deep cut is a blowout risk — replace before riding.
  • Test Your Brakes Squeeze each lever firmly. It should feel responsive without bottoming out against the bar. On bikes with hydraulic disc brakes, sponginess can indicate air in the brake line — schedule a bleed before riding.
  • Check Wheel Security Quick-release skewers should require real hand pressure to close — if they swing freely, they're not tight enough. For thru-axle wheels, confirm the axle is properly threaded.
  • Lubricate the Chain (When Needed) If your chain sounds scratchy or looks dull and dry, apply a small amount of bike-specific lubricant to the inner links while backpedaling slowly. Wipe off the excess — too much lube attracts grit.
  • Quick Visual Scan Take five seconds to look for anything obviously wrong: a bent derailleur, a loose saddle, a brake pad rubbing the rotor. Most problems are visible before they become critical.

Seasonal Maintenance: Spring & Fall

  • Schedule a Professional Tune-Up A mechanic will catch what you won't — cable fatigue, bearing wear, brake alignment, frame stress points. Most shops offer packages at different service levels. Do this at least once a year.
  • Full Bike Wash Use a soft brush, warm soapy water, and bike-specific degreaser on the drivetrain. Avoid pressure washers — they force water into bearings. Rinse gently, dry thoroughly, re-lubricate the chain.
  • Inspect the Drivetrain Use a chain wear indicator tool to check chain stretch. A worn chain left in place will destroy your cassette — turning a $15 fix into a $150 one. Replace before it's too late.

  • Inspect the Frame and Fork Check welds, the head tube, and the bottom bracket shell for cracks. On carbon frames, any crack is serious — have it inspected by a professional before riding.

Winter Storage: Putting Your Bike Away Right

  • Clean Thoroughly Before Storing Never store a dirty bike. Road salt, grit, and moisture accelerate corrosion during storage. Full wash, degrease the drivetrain, and dry everything completely.
  • Lubricate Everything Apply a generous coat of chain lube as a protective layer. Lube brake and derailleur pivot points. Wipe a thin coat of bike oil on any exposed metal that might corrode.
  • Inflate Tires Fully Store with tires at proper PSI. Storing on flat or low tires can cause the rubber to crack or deform at the contact point, especially in cold temperatures.
  • Store Indoors If Possible Temperature swings and humidity are hard on bikes. Indoors is always better. If outdoor storage is your only option, use a breathable bike cover — not plastic, which traps condensation.
  • Relieve Cable Tension (Optional) If storing for two months or more, slightly loosen brake and derailleur cable tension to reduce long-term stress on cables and housing.
  • Remove the Battery (E-Bikes Only) Store lithium batteries at room temperature at 40–80% charge. Cold storage at full or empty charge degrades battery health over time.
  • Do a Full Inspection Before Your First Spring Ride Run through the daily checklist and schedule a tune-up. Cables can corrode, tires deflate, and bearings dry out over winter. Don't skip the spring check-in.
