Being based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, gives Brooklyn Bicycle Co. firsthand knowledge to make well-priced bikes capable of withstanding the rigors of NYC commutes — and the brand's Roebling model is a great example. While the Roebling's design is simple and understated, it's entirely practical for commuting, fitness, and leisurely rides.
Brooklyn builds the Roebling around a double-butted cromoly frame. Although its skinny tubes might look retro compared to the shaped and formed ones used on alloy-framed hybrids, the bike is lightweight (approximately 30 pounds), durable, and easy to ride. The bike features a 1x9-speed drivetrain, including an 11-41-tooth cassette and 42T chainring (it enables you to climb most hills while still having speed for flatter parts of your ride). Unlike many similarly priced hybrids, the Roebling is equipped with V-style rim brakes; while not as flashy as disc brakes, they are lighterweight and easier to adjust.
Buying Tip: If you're 5'6" or shorter, also check out the Lorimer. It's essentially the same bike as the Roebling, but in smaller sizes (and in two color options).
