How it works
Checking out with Truemed takes three steps:
All three happen inside checkout. You don't need any paperwork before you start.
Step 1
Choose Truemed at checkout
Find the Truemed option in the payment step and select it. If a Shop Pay window opens first, close it, because Truemed is a separate payment option.
Step 2
Complete a health survey
Take a private health survey. An independent licensed practitioner reviews your answers to determine eligibility, and if you qualify, Truemed emails you a Letter of Medical Necessity.
Step 3
Make your purchase
Pay with your HSA or FSA card, or with a regular credit card. If you use a regular card, follow the guide that comes with your Letter of Medical Necessity to submit your purchase for reimbursement.
Then it's our usual routine. We ship your bike to a partner shop near you, they build and check it, and you pick it up ready to ride. Shipping and assembly are on us.
Your options
Which HSA/FSA payment option fits you?
| Option | How you pay | When the money moves | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| HSA or FSA card | Enter your HSA or FSA card in Truemed checkout | At purchase, straight from your account | Riders with enough balance to cover the bike |
| Regular card, reimbursed later | Pay with any credit or debit card in Truemed checkout | After you send your receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity to your plan | Plans that pay by reimbursement, or no HSA/FSA card on hand |
| Split payment | HSA or FSA card for part, another card for the rest | Partly at purchase, the rest on your other card | Balances smaller than the price of the bike |
Same bike, smaller tax bill
How does using my HSA or FSA save me money?
HSA and FSA accounts were created so people could use pre-tax money on expenses that treat, mitigate, or prevent a diagnosed medical condition.
Because that money is never taxed as income, it goes further. Rather than pay taxes on your wages and then spend what's left, qualified customers can put pre-tax dollars toward the bike. Truemed reports that qualified customers save an average of 30%.

Before you check out
Do you qualify? The 3-question HSA/FSA bike check
Run through these first. If all three are a yes, choosing Truemed at checkout is worth your time. The survey decides the rest.
-
Do you have an HSA or FSA with money in it?
Truemed works with Health Savings Accounts and health Flexible Spending Accounts. If you're not sure what you have, your employer's benefits portal or your insurer will know. Planning to fund one during open enrollment counts too.
-
Is regular exercise part of managing a health condition for you?
The IRS counts costs that treat, mitigate, or prevent disease, not purchases for general health. Truemed's survey asks about your health, and an independent licensed practitioner decides whether a Letter of Medical Necessity is appropriate. Neither Truemed nor Brooklyn Bicycle Co. makes that call.
-
Is it an eligible bike, shipping within the U.S.?
Truemed works in the United States only, and we ship to the 48 contiguous states. The bikes on this page are set up for Truemed checkout. Accessories may not be.
The rules
Why can a bike count as a medical expense?
The IRS says amounts paid to improve your general health don't qualify as medical expenses. A bike bought for general fitness is not an eligible HSA or FSA expense on its own.
A Letter of Medical Necessity closes that gap. It documents why a licensed practitioner recommends exercise for a specific condition, which is what lets a bike qualify for qualified customers. Truemed handles that documentation and the IRS Section 213(d) compliance work, and says independent clinicians have issued more than 1 million letters through its platform.
For context, the CDC recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity every week.
Medical expenses are the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease.

Shop eligible bikesCan I use my HSA or FSA to buy a bike?
Yes, if you qualify. Brooklyn Bicycle Co. accepts HSA and FSA payments through Truemed. At checkout you complete a health survey, an independent licensed practitioner reviews it, and if they find you qualify, you receive a Letter of Medical Necessity that lets you pay with pre-tax dollars. Without that letter, a bike bought for general fitness is not an eligible HSA or FSA expense.
What are HSA and FSA accounts?
A Health Savings Account (HSA) and a health Flexible Spending Account (FSA) let you set aside pre-tax money for eligible health expenses. HSAs pair with high-deductible health plans, and the balance rolls over year to year. Health FSAs come through employers and usually have a use-it-or-lose-it deadline. If you're not sure which one you have, check with your employer or insurer.
How do I pay with my HSA or FSA at checkout?
Add your bike to the cart, start checkout, and select Truemed as your payment method. If a Shop Pay window opens, close it, because Truemed is a separate option. Complete the health survey, then pay with your HSA or FSA card, a regular card, or a split of both.
What happens if I don't qualify?
Truemed lets you know, and you're fully refunded. You can then finish your purchase with a regular credit or debit card if you'd like. Either way, the bike, the free shipping, and the free pro assembly stay the same.
What is a Letter of Medical Necessity, and how is this compliant?
A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is a document from a licensed practitioner explaining why a product helps treat, mitigate, or prevent a specific health condition. The IRS defines medical expenses as the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, and excludes purchases made only for general health. An LMN documents that link, which is how a bike can qualify for qualified customers. Truemed facilitates the evaluation and the documentation, and independent licensed practitioners issue the letters.
How much can I save by paying with HSA or FSA funds?
Truemed reports that qualified customers save an average of 30%, because HSA and FSA dollars are not taxed as income. On a $699.99 Roebling, a 30% combined tax rate works out to about $209.99 in tax savings. Your actual savings depend on your federal and state tax brackets and your plan's rules. HSA/FSA tax savings vary.
Can I split the payment between my HSA or FSA card and another card?
Yes. If your HSA or FSA balance doesn't cover the full price, Truemed checkout lets you put part of the order on your HSA or FSA card and the rest on another card.
Can I pay with a regular credit card and get reimbursed later?
Yes. Select Truemed at checkout and pay with your regular card. After your purchase, Truemed emails instructions for submitting your receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity to your HSA or FSA administrator for reimbursement.
Are bike accessories HSA or FSA eligible?
The bikes on this page are set up for Truemed checkout. Accessories like locks, lights, and helmets may not qualify. If your cart includes items that aren't eligible, Truemed checkout asks you to pay for them separately.
Do I need any paperwork before I check out?
No. The health survey happens inside Truemed checkout, and an independent licensed practitioner reviews your answers there. If they find you qualify, Truemed emails you a Letter of Medical Necessity and your purchase goes through with your HSA or FSA card.
Are there fees for using Truemed?
The cost of Truemed's service is included in the purchase price. You pay the same price for the bike whether you check out with Truemed or another payment method.
When should I use my FSA dollars?
For most plans, unused health FSA funds expire at the end of the plan year, often December 31. Some plans offer a grace period, or let you carry over up to $680 of unused 2026 funds into 2027. Check your plan's deadline. HSA balances roll over from year to year.
What are the 2026 HSA and FSA contribution limits?
For 2026, the IRS caps HSA contributions at $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage, plus a $1,000 catch-up if you're 55 or older. The health FSA limit for 2026 is $3,400. For 2027, the HSA limits rise to $4,500 and $9,000.
I don't have an HSA or FSA. Can I still benefit from Truemed?
Truemed is for people who have an HSA or FSA, or who plan to fund one during open enrollment, so ask your employer what your benefits include. If you don't have either, you can still spread out the cost of any Brooklyn bike with Buy Now, Pay Later through Affirm.
I don't live in the U.S. Can I still use Truemed?
No. Truemed is available in the United States only. Brooklyn Bicycle Co. ships to the 48 contiguous states, with free professional assembly at a partner shop near you.
What if I change my order after paying with Truemed?
Your Letter of Medical Necessity applies to the items in your original order. If you switch models, sizes, or add accessories, the letter may no longer apply, and Truemed doesn't reissue it automatically. Contact Truemed at support@truemed.com to requalify or request an updated letter.
How do returns work if I paid with HSA or FSA funds?
Our 30-Day Love at First Ride Promise works the same way for Truemed orders, and you request a return through us as usual. If you paid with an HSA or FSA card, the refund goes back to that same card. It can take longer than a regular bank refund, so if you haven't seen it after 15 business days, contact your card issuer. Refunds to a regular credit or debit card follow our usual timeline.
Who decides if I qualify?
Independent licensed practitioners working with Truemed review your health survey and decide whether a Letter of Medical Necessity is appropriate. Brooklyn Bicycle Co. doesn't make that decision, and your HSA or FSA administrator decides reimbursement.
